They kept the car for 2 days, initially saying there was no problem, and then said there might be an update after all to the transmission software and installed it. I found that hard to believe as similar issues have occurred in coworkers gm cars and are also reported on the internet in Saturn and gm forums. When I contacted the dealer they said they were unaware of any issues like this. It is simply an indicator of the oil consumption problem, or other problems such as emissions system, ignition system, or fuel injection system etc. I took it to my local mechanic that very day and was advised I would need to go to the gm dealer as it was a problem with the computer programming in the transmission. I was able to get it to go by using the manual shift feature for a bit and then it settled down again. This was very upsetting and is certainly a safety issue. On June 25 and 26, it acted up more then usual and the transmission finally failed to provide any forward momentum after about 20 feet and 5 mph even though the tachometer showed 5000rpm while pulling out into 55 mph traffic on a 2 lane country road about noon on the 26th. The dealer it was purchased from couldn't find anything wrong with it. Dumb.The car has seemed to miss shifts with the engines revving, a delay, and then a hard upshift for several years on an intermittent basis. Early GM can-bus systems are very complicated and the strategy employed to protect us all from polluting cars is to throw unhelpful codes for poor electrical signals.

It took me some time to arrive at the conclusion that the grounds on these particular cars are not great-the ground on the shock tower, driver side is also suspect, there is actually a TSB from GM about the ground points on these cars.

Seriously, a guy I know gave me this car for free because the dealership had no idea how to get these issues to go away. Unfortunately, the Aura brought its own problems: namely cheap. If you have the XR, there is a 4 gauge wire that goes from the left-front radiator support (up top) to the battery-this one has always been a -problem, if I loosen it or disturb it in any way, I end up loosening it and moving it around to get it happy again. Notes: The Saturn Aura was a mid-size car meant to replace the somewhat problematic L-Series. I invariably have to play a little dance with the connections at the battery-even though all connections are immaculate, tight and prepped for conduction.
Whenever I disconnect the battery for any reason. Don't overlook the ground solution too, these things are notorious for doing things like this-case in point, I've had my 07 XR for 5 years now (was given to me for free) and I still have an intermittent issue with the dreaded 'traction control/ESC/security/whatever else can make the dash look like a Christmas tree problem.
